British Gas announces two new EV tariffs

British Gas have announced two new initiatives that will help to drive down the cost of running an electric vehicle in the UK, and to make charging easier.

To be introduced this month, the new Off-Peak Saver Tariff will make the charging process more affordable, and a new British Gas Payment Plan will spread the cost of purchasing a charging point.

The Off-Peak Saver Tariff is designed especially for EV owners and helps with their higher than average electricity consumption – it will allow subscribers to save around £30 per year based on an annual mileage of 8,000 miles.

Off-peak hours will be extended to 20 hours per day, between 8pm and 4pm, when the Off-Peak Saver Tariff users will save 12% compared to their standard tariff, offering a more cost effective way to charge an electric car or van.

Savings will also be noticed when using electrical appliances such as dishwashers or washing machines in the off-peak hours. The new tariff will also be one of the first from British Gas that includes a next generation smart meter.

The second initiative, the British Gas Payment Plan will help those who purchase a charging point from British Gas to spread the cost of installation over 12 monthly, interest-free payments. The ‘Charging Solution’ points are priced at £799, but the new payment plan means the whole cost can be paid in flexible instalments.

Dan Taylor, Director of New Ventures at British Gas said: “Electric cars are coming of age and these new initiatives are part of our continued commitment to make running an electric car easier. The new Off-Peak Saver Tariff gives drivers greater flexibility around when they can charge their electric car or van, as well as helping them spread the cost of paying for a dedicated fast and safe charge point.

Our national network of electrical engineers provides all the advice and expertise necessary to enable electric car owners to power their car quickly and safely, and for less money.”

British Gas is working in partnership with leading electric vehicle manufacturers in the UK, and is currently charge point installer for Toyota, Nissan and Renault.
